Everyone had forgotten her ... almost. With a year-end 2008 and early 2009 full of major victories on Ironman, we would finally see the beautiful New Zealand athlete at the Ironman France-Nice, then Roth, a crazy gamble: that s 'Snap Ironman in two weeks. But in Nice the trouble started, to end only 4 months later by a superb new ... Gina (Ferguson?) Is back!

Xtriathlon : Hi Gina. How are you ? Hawaii is past and I was reading the interview we made last year after your race in Kona, and your ambition to be on the women podium this year… We were waiting for you in Nice, and after we learned about your heart problems… What about you ?

Gina Ferguson : I have had many problems in the second half of this year.

First I got very sick with a Flu virus just before Ironman France. I had to pull out but I was still in Nice and was so sad to not be racing. I thought I would be OK to race Challenge Roth 2 weeks later but I probably pushed my body too hard and collapsed after the bike section. I was unconscious for a few hours. I then went home and had some tests. I discovered I have a heart condition and that I have had since birth. It is no problem to me and it won't hold me back. I then trained very, very hard for 5 weeks in Australia. I was very, very determined to have a good race at Ironman Wisconsin and make up for Challenge Roth. I traveled 30 hours to get to the race but caught a stomach bug getting there. I have never been so sick, for 3 whole days just could not move, only to throw up. I could not even start the race (I think I have learnt my lesson from Roth). I was very, very upset as I was in good form and I had traveled such a long way and paid such a lot of money to be there. I then had to travel 30 hours back to New Zealand and tried to focus on Hawaii.

But I fell over when I was running and twisted my ankle. I thought this would be no problem, I have never had injury and any niggle I have had is solved very quickly. But the Doctor said it would be 8-12 weeks to heal and there was just 3-4 weeks until the race in Hawaii. I tried everything to get it to heal but nothing worked, before racing Hawaii I could not run for even 20 minutes. I thought I would try, if I was in contention after the bike I would try to run through the pain, if I was too far back off the bike I would not risk to run as if I did I could have more problems and not be able to race for months. So I did swim and then very bad bike ride and then I did not run. I then could take 2 weeks off from all training and then start running and biking again and now it is finally healing and I can nearly run again as normal. I was very upset after Kona but now I pull myself together  and I will race at Ironman Western Australia in December and I hope that I will have a good end to the year to make up for all the bad things. I hope to finish the race and do a good time.

Xtriathlon: Just one thing ... I have not found your name on the start list of Hawaii. Now I know why ... you explain?

Gina Ferguson : Yes I was married in Hawaii on October 1st so am now Gina Crawford. We had a wonderful day.
